I live 1/2 mile from this dam. It is 114 years old and it held. When the river crested, 1.2 million gallons of water per second was coming over the dam.

This bridge is 65 feet above the normal water level.

More to come.

This is nothing compared to what happened just over the mountain in NC.

Here is another video of the Nolachuckey about 20 miles upstream from my house. Back in the 80's I dated a girl from up there and spent a lot of time in the area. At the end of the video is the old Chuckey Trading Post. We used to eat there a couple of times a week. Mexican food, draft beer and live music. The old house was surrounded by trees and had picnic tables in the yard down by the river. Watched John Prine play there one night. Now it's all gone.

Back in the early 80's I was stationed at Offutt AFB in Omaha, and we dug some people out after the Missouri flooded its banks. This was a 100-year flood, but in this area a 100-year flood occurs about every ten years.

Some people we met had been flooded out three or four times, and they just kept fixing the damage and living there. I certainly wouldn't have, but I guess they liked the scenery or something.

They ended up getting their houses fixed. Their yards were about six inches higher because of all the silt that was deposited, but they didn't mind. And I got another oak leaf cluster for my Humanitarian medal. The taxpayers? Yeah, they got screwed.

The people here will rebuild. They don't have any choice. The land here is either straight up or down in a deep valley with a river of creek flowing through it. That why we lost so many roads. There's no choice but to build along the streams.

And the taxpayers aren't paying for this, we aren't getting jack shit from this do nothing useless government. Fema better stear clear of Appalachia, folks here are about ready to lynch them. Folks here are taking care of their own. Local church's and civic orgs are doing all the work with a lot of help from private groups outside the area.

One difference between then and now, my unit didn't wait for orders to come down. We all sacrificed days off to get out there with shovels and a truck we requisitioned to haul off debris. So yes, we were "volunteers" in the sense no one ordered us to do it, and we sure weren't paid overtime for our labor. All we got were "attaboys" that looked good on our fitness reports, and another shiny thing to put on our uniforms.

I guess the military these days just doesn't work that way.

The troops in NC are staged and ready to go but c/o hasn't signed off yet. They're getting pissed too.

Some aid workers cleared a road into a small NC town that had been completely cut off. They were met by several heavily armed men. When they asked Are you worried about looters?, the men replied No. These men were waiting on Fema to show up so they could run them off at gunpoint. The mountain people neither need nor want their help. This disaster has proven to them what we knew all along, that the gov. will not help you. People here are mad as he'll at the do nothing authorities who roll in 10 days later and think they're going to be in charge.
