Well, that coup just kind of fizzled out. Erdogan now wants the plotters arrested and punished as traitors and terrorists.
One of the terrorists Erdogan wants is Fetullah Gulen , leader of the "parallel state," or FETO/PDY. This could be interesting, since Gulen lives in exile in Pennsylvania. He runs a network of charitable organizations and other businesses here, including about 150 charter schools.
The U.S. has previously declined to extradite him to Turkey, where he is wanted on terrorism charges.
Onward and upward,
airforce Gullen supposedly went to Turkey right at the start of this thing and is holed up somewhere trying to get back to the US. Turkey was trying to extradite him from the US a while back and when this coup started, he supposedly flew over there.
Erdogan wanted to do a purge anyway, so this big thing is his opportunity. Some people blame the CIA for the coup, but I don't think so, in fact I am taking back my original notions of the Russians backing it. It seems the coup collapsed because they really did not have much backing.
