for those that may be near me (huntington WV) there is a local business that sells among other things(flowers and trees) blue food grade barrels..they are $12 a piece and the ones i saw had either cider vinegar or kikioman soy sauce in them according to the label.. i was also hoping to see a label with a local address on it so i could get a source but no luck..he may have them trucked in from the place in MI and WI that was on the labels because at the begining of the summer he has like 100 of them sitting around.. i bought 2 and rinsed them out with plain water and some baking soda..soy sauce has a very strong smell after sitting in a barrel for a while..

I get the white drums from the local packing plant. They held an industrial strength Clorox bleach. I believe it is around 12%. A simple rince is all that's needed. The contents of the drum will always leech into the plastic of the drum no matter how well it is washed. Why not buy the drums that contained something that you are going to put into the drums anyway? So I have a little bleach leeching into my water. I look at it as time release purification.

I am able to buy the drums directly from the laundry contractor for $45. They reuse them and that's why they are so high priced from them. That's actually the deposit on the drum. We have a large bakery here. I can usually get once used metal drums with removeable tops for free. They had peanut butter in them. The bakery has to pay to have the drums destroyed so they gladly give a few of them away. Originally posted by Tobor: i cant even find one for the pepsi people.. Use COKE not Pepsi! Not to worry: He was doing Coke, too.

Tobor, go to www.grainger.com and look for product 3BY41 it's a plastic crank pump designed for water based products. I work for a DOT and this pump is the only one that has not siezed up on us when we use it with our water drums for our saws and small rollers. Most of the hand pumps have some iron or steel parts that eventually rust.

I have thought more and more about picking a few of these up, as for storage is there anything I should know? perhaps time limits as to their storage life for staying steril.
Thanks Getnlwr

If any of you can find a poly farm tank cheap, I'd suggest using it. The manufacturer usually has a few seconds laying around that might be picked up at half price.
1300 to 1800 gallons in one tank sure would be nice. It would take up less room than 20-30 drums.
Manufacturers usually grind up the seconds and remold them if they are too badly flawed. Check with them often.
I'm currently looking for a 1300 gallon one. It's 84" in diameter and 66" tall. We're looking at cutting a circular hole in a side wall about 24" in diameter and using it for a shelter at our camp site. It can be partially buried if needed.

If you were using that for more than one trip at a camp site, assuming that it ever gets cold, wouldnt condensation be an issue. It seems to me that you would always be cleaning it and removign moisture from it.

We are looking for a location that we could bury or at least earth berm the back and 2 sides. The open side would need to be painted to blend in to the surrounding vegitation. If we really had to, we could cut the floor out of it so we had a dirt floor. Cedar wood chips would keep most vermin out whil we weren't present.

The big barrels also work well as props on shooting ranges. Empty barrels are easily moved to simulate different types of cover. So even the barrels with cracks or holes in them are still useful to some extent.

It would let water drain, and allow you to make it a bit deeper or taller depending on how you look at it, Adding a few CUFT could be wonderful. Adding some ceder chips like mentioned above would be a great.

$12 FRN per barrel is an excellent price, but they do need to be thoroughly rinsed before storing water.
I obtained two of the soy sauce barrels, but I paid more because they had been twice-rinsed, leaving very little soy sauce odor, and they are great because you can actually tilt them on edge and move them when they are full (400 lbs. of H2O).
Good find!
I would gladly lay aside the use of arms and settle matters by negotiation, but unless the whole will, the matter ends, and I take up my battle rifle, and thank God that He has put it within my grasp.
